Dear Reader,
try to think about the evolution of running: from cotton clothes to ultra-technical garments. From rough shoes to elastic and responsive miracles of technology. From “Yes, I guess I remember this path” to GPS. Everything changed, yet we still agree on what “running” means.
The same is true for cars, school system, ice creams, research, painting… you name it: putting details apart, you could agree with any person from X years ago about the essential meaning of the craft.
Similarly, the more I think that we live in an ever-changing world, the more I try to remind myself that what change ore only the “mechanics”, not the underlying assumptions about our behaviour.
We have to remember that, genetically speaking, we have been the same race for the last 100.000 years or so, and our psychology hasn’t changed much in the meantime: the basic needs are the same; we still need to eat, make money, have sex, feel in control, have fun…
Going down one kind of path, today we achieve our goals via big data, yesterday by selling computers and OSs, before through cars, industry, feudal rights, agriculture, hunting & gathering… These are what I call the mechanics, and they are changing faster and faster.
The laws of Nature and human psychology fall into the category of what does not change, and I would like to concentrate more on the knowledge of this kind of subjects, since it would be a long-lasting investment of my time and it can help have a better grasp about what does change (hey, that’s the main reason I attended the faculty of Physics after all!). Yet, there is an aspect about them that is accelerating over time: the amount of breakthrough knowledge we are developing about those subjects, making the investment even more profitable.
Until next time, if you want to take part in the race, choose your gears wisely!
